The Poovar beach separates the river from the sea and is quite breathtaking.
Poovar is a tourist town in Neyyattinkara in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala state, South India. Poovar is famous for its backwaters, pristine beaches, beautiful estuaries, and exotic resorts. In Poovar, you get to experience the remarkable sight of the Neyyar river, Poovar lake, Arabian sea and the Gold Sand Beach converging at the estuary. There are lots of exotic resorts and tour operators who offer tour packages based on your needs and requirements.
The main attractions at Poovar are the backwaters, mangroves, estuary, golden sand beach, exotic resorts (Isola Di Cocco, Estuary Island, Poovar Island resorts) floating restaurants, a wide variety of birds and the biodiversity of the place. Other places of interest around Poovar are Kovalam, Vizhinjam, and Azhimala.

Poovar had a royal connection as well and it owed its name to a king. The historical importance of Poovar has its strong ties with the legendary King of the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore, the great Marthanda Varma Maharaja.

The Raja was fascinated by the sight of red flowers, chipped out from the Kovala trees growing along the Neyyar river, which floated in the river as a red carpet on water. The legend is that the stream was named as “POOVAR” as the Raja described the river as “POO-AAR” ( meaning a stream of flowers).
The drive is not just beautiful, but it takes you into the heart of rustic India.
Poovar is truly a window into paradise. The tranquility of Poovar is punctuated by the sound of waves and the birds. Poovar Beach, south of Kovalam Beach, separates the River Neyyar from the sea. Poovar is basically a fishing village and the only way to reach Poovar is through the water.
